Mentorship

General Introduction:
The High School Mentorship provides high school students in grades  the opportunity to learn and work alongside professionals. High School Mentorship exposes students to various healthcare fields and careers.  Students will find practical, real-world applications for their academic knowledge through in-person or virtual learning experiences.

Deadlines and additional requirements may vary based on the school. We encourage students to connect with their school to better understand deadlines and additional requirements.

Please note that the Department of Nursing has opted out of participating in the High School Mentorship program.

Application Process
Students should connect with their school in order to start the application process to ensure eligibility. Participating schools have been provided a copy of the application and guidelines. Should your school wish to participate in the program, have an educator contact Career Awareness to start the process.

Career Observation

General Introduction:
Career Observation provides high school and college undergraduates the opportunity to learn and observe professionals. Through observation and connecting with professionals, students will confirm their career interests.

The Department of Nursing has opted out of the career observation. Applications requesting to observe nursing careers will be denied.

Please note the observation program will not meet any required clinical hours needed to graduate schooling.

If you are post-undergraduate, you will not qualify for this program. If you are post-undergraduate and looking to observe a Clinician, please refer to the instructions below regarding that process.

High School Application Process
Students should connect with their school prior to starting the application to ensure eligibility. Schools have been provided a copy of the application and guidelines. Should your school wish to participate in the program, have an educator contact Career Awareness to start the process.

College Undergraduate Application Process

College students looking to complete an observation will need to find a host willing to let the student observe them. Once you have secured a host, contact Career Awareness to start the process.

If you are looking to observe a Clinician, you will follow a different process. You will have to find a Clinician who is willing to let you observe them in practice.  Once they have agreed to be your host, the Clinician will need to contact Education Business Services for next steps.

Medical Experience (MedEx) Program 

General Introduction:

The Medical Experience Program at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire provides medical experiences to high school and college students who are considering careers as physicians. During the program, students job shadow physicians in a variety of specialties in a clinic setting.

High School:

Qualifications - To be considered for the program, students must:

• Volunteer a minimum of 30 hours at Mayo Clinic Health System. To begin the process of becoming a volunteer, please visit this link and complete a volunteer application.  20 of the 30 hours must be completed before the start of application process. Any remaining hours may be completed after the application deadline but before beginning the program.
• Be at least 16 years old
• Be at least a junior in high school
• Be seriously considering a career as a physician

How to Apply

• Completing an application available from Volunteer Services, high school guidance counselor or Medical Education.
• Write an essay
• Submit two letters of reference

Timeline - High School applications are due in the spring; rotations are completed during summer only.

College:

Discover Mayo Clinic

General Introduction:
Discover Mayo Clinic provides students in the 10th-12th grade interested in health-related careers with the opportunity to engage with professionals in a hands-on and engaging atmosphere. Topics and careers have included: Histology, Surgical Skills, Emergency Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, Sports Medicine, and Casting.

Application Process
Open to students regardless of physical location. We encourage students to reach out to Career Awareness to learn more about the application process.

Virtual Career Tours

General Introduction:
Virtual Career Tours are pre-recorded videos that highlight various careers at Mayo Clinic. Viewers get to see professionals in the field, see what a typical day is like, and learn about what it takes to become a professional in that field. These videos are intended for high school students but are useful for those who may wish to change or confirm careers. These 25-mintues videos are free to anyone who wants to view them. Visit our video library to see if we have a video that interests you. New videos will be uploaded to that site as we complete them.
