Engineering
The Division of Engineering is a comprehensive organization that develops unique medical devices. Our current staff has a combined 1,000 years of experience providing engineering solutions.
As a member of our team, you'll join:
- Biomedical, chemical, electrical, mechanical and software engineers
- Electronic tecnicians
- Mechanical engineering technicians
- Mechanical designers
- A scientific glassblower
Our devices span the patient care spectrum from benchtop research to patient bedside. This includes novel applications of deep brain stimulation, biosensor development, tissue engineering, organ assist devices and surgical instruments.

Work Areas
Mayo Clinic Division of Engineering is organized into four major functional units:
Electronics Development Unit uses a multidisciplinary approach to developing unique devices and systems using electrical and biomedical engineering.
Specific skills include:
- Physiologic sensor design and interfaces
- Signal processing and analysis
- Simulation and modeling of systems
- Automation systems
- Engineering consultation services
Software Development Unit designs, develops and tests software solutions for Deivision of Engineering projects.
Specialty areas include:
- Embedded microprocessor programming
- Software-based digital signal processing
- Image analysis and image manipulation
- User interface development
Portfolio Management Office, a group of full-time project managers within the Division of Engineering, is responsible for all project oversight activities. Project managers have technical backgrounds in mechanical, electrical or software engineering.
Their responsibilities include:
- Manage all projects within the Division of Engineering
- Plan and execute projects, using "best practice" project management methodologies
- Project management consultation to external group
- Interaction with project managers across Mayo Clinic to share knowledge, to develop training opportunities, to improve skills and to advance the discipline of project management at Mayo
- Process Improvement
Biomechanical Development Unit, as part of a mulitdisciplinary approach to developing unique devices and systems in the Division of Engineering, applies skills in mechanical and biomedical engineering.
They provide:
- Conceptual and detailed mechanical design
- Development of automation systems
- Simulation and modeling of mechanical and physiological systems (finite element analysis, and so on)
- Solid modeling
- Engineering consultation services
- Custom fabrication
Machine Shop
Biomechanical Shop
In-house fabrication group custom building biomedical instruments and systems for use in research and direct patient care.
Capabilities include:
- CNC machining
- Plastics fabrication
- Molding and casting
- Laser - cutting, marking, and welding
- Waterjet
- Sheet metal fabrication
Scientific Glassblowing Laboratory
The glassblower helps design and create unique pieces of apparatus for Mayo experiments and research, modifies commercially available glass to suit specific Mayo needs and repairs standard laboratory glassware.
