Responsibilities
The anesthesia technician supports anesthesia providers and medical/surgical teams by assisting with activities essential to patient assessment, anesthesia intervention, physiological monitoring, and direct patient care. They are responsible for the preparation, setup, calibration, and troubleshooting of invasive monitoring lines, ensuring the sterile placement of catheters such as arterial lines, pulmonary artery catheters, and central venous pressure lines. In addition, the technician assists with patient transport and monitoring to and from Critical Care Units and within perioperative areas. They also provide support during emergency situations, including difficult airway management. The anesthesia technician is responsible for identifying and resolving issues with the Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) machine and reviewing Echo Information Management System (EIMS) reports to ensure that imaging data is accurately linked and assigned to the appropriate anesthesiologist. Technicians may also float to the Regional Block department, where they assist anesthesia providers with the preparation, setup, and maintenance of equipment and supplies used for regional anesthesia procedures. A thorough understanding of various nerve blocks and the emergency drugs stored in the regional cart is essential. The technician remains at the patient’s side during these procedures, ensuring safety until post-procedure care is complete. Under the supervision of a licensed provider, the anesthesia technician performs patient identification procedures to ensure the accurate delivery of blood products and medications. They are also responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, and safe handling of equipment and supplies used for patient treatment, monitoring, and testing. This includes timely retrieval and delivery of medications, equipment, and other necessary items. Technicians help implement new anesthesia equipment by participating in product trials and in-service training. They proactively identify and mitigate safety risks, reporting any issues promptly. They also collaborate closely with the supply logistics team to manage and restock anesthesia supplies throughout the hospital’s operating rooms and procedural areas. Strong multitasking and communication skills are required to perform effectively in this fast-paced, team-oriented environment. The anesthesia technician also plays a key role in mentoring and training new staff and may assist supervisors with quality control initiatives and performance improvement efforts. The role requires a high level of independent judgment and professionalism in carrying out anesthesia technician duties.
Qualifications
EDUCATION: High school diploma required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Paramedic certificationpreferred. EXPERIENCE: The Anesthesia Technician must have clinical expertise and a solid understanding of hemodynamic monitoring, with preferred qualifications including EMT, Paramedic, CNA, or PCT experience. This role requires flexibility, adaptability to unpredictable situations, and effective multitasking across multiple floors. Candidates should demonstrate independent judgment, motivation, accountability, compassion, and a strong interest in patient care. Physical strength is needed to manage tasks such as pushing and pulling stretchers and equipment. A high school diploma or G.E.D. with a strong background in math, science, and problem-solving is required, along with knowledge of medical terminology, word processing, and databases. The technician must work independently without direct supervision, be available for “On-Call” situations, and display a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and reliability.
