Responsibilities
Mayo Clinic is seeking an academic, innovative leader to serve as the Division Chair for the Division of Advanced GI and Bariatric Surgery at our academic medical center in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Division of Advanced GI and Bariatric Surgery leads the Department of Surgery in the surgical care for patients with complex foregut, bariatric, gastric, abdominal wall, acute care surgery, and wound needs. The Chair is a key leadership role accountable for advancing the clinical, academic, and strategic growth of the division. The selected individual will drive innovation by integrating advanced minimally invasive and robotic procedures, leveraging emerging technologies, expanding multidisciplinary care models, and building and supporting a robust research and education portfolio. This leader will be responsible for achieving exceptional patient outcomes, advancing financial performance and growth, and recruiting, developing and retaining top-tier talent to further Mayo Clinic’s mission.
Outcomes Expected
• Develop and execute a clear, forward-looking vision and strategy to grow and differentiate the Division of Advanced GI and Bariatric Surgery
• Prioritize and implement business and clinical strategies that position the division for long-term success
• Drive innovation across clinical practice, education, and research, particularly in minimally invasive, endoscopic, and bariatric interventions
• Strengthen multidisciplinary collaboration across gastroenterology, thoracic surgery, bariatric medicine, oncology, and other surgical and medical specialties to
optimize patient outcome
• Ensure effective operational and financial management of the division
• Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing faculty and staff to sustain Mayo Clinic’s leadership in surgical care
• Lead the adoption and integration of AI- enabled tools to enhance clinical efficiency, documentation, and decision support
• Expand and operationalize care beyond walls strategies
• Leverage Mayo Clinic Platform to inform clinical pathways, improve patient selection and triage, and support data- driven practice transformation.
Ideal Candidate Profile
• Board certification in General Surgery; eligibility for full Florida licensure required
• Academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor required
• Demonstrated record of academic productivity, national reputation, and consistent scholarly activity
• Proven leadership experience with the ability to lead high-performing teams and drive strategic initiatives
• Strong understanding of multidisciplinary care models, including collaboration with gastroenterology, thoracic surgery, oncology, and related specialties
• Track record of advancing clinical innovation, including minimally invasive, robotic, or endoscopic techniques
• Experience or demonstrated interest in applying artificial intelligence, digital tools, or data platforms to clinical practice
• Familiarity with/or ability to leverage enterprise data platforms ( i.e., Mayo Clinic Platform) to drive clinical, operational, or research insights
• Commitment to mentoring and developing faculty and trainees
• Ability to build strong internal and external relationships and represent the division at a national level
• Recognized as an expert in Advanced GI, foregut/esophageal, Bariatric, or Acute Care Surgery
