Responsibilities

Serves as communicator between patients, physicians and allied staff, translating their conversation accurately. Utilizes language skills and demonstrates competency in the target language, as well as in English. Explains cultural differences or practices to ensure complete understanding. Participates actively as a member of the Patient Care Team. Document all interpretation encounters within the Language Services system. Utilize on-line computer systems such as Outlook, some knowledge of Microsoft Suite is preferred, and usage of Epic is required. Interpreter works in compliance with: all office and hospital policies and procedures, particularly those regarding patient confidentiality and informed consent, and performance competencies listed in the IMIA Standards of Practice, and the Interpreters Code of Ethics. Understands and abides by all published Standards of Practice and Codes of Ethics for Medical Interpreters. Also assists department with on-the-job training, mentoring of interpreter practicums as well as other professional development needs of certified and Non-Certified interpreters.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: 
1. High school degree with 3 years of experience as an interpreter (preferably in a health care setting) or two years of college level education required
2. Fluency in English and the target language required.
3. Applicants will be expected to pass skill screening tests for language and translating proficiency during interview process.
4. Expected to participate in training offered by MCJ, take relevant classes, and maintain a high professional profile.
5. A certified interpreter is preferred. Candidates who are not currently certified must obtain certification within 12 months from date of hire

EXPERIENCE: 
1. Must possess basic understanding of medical protocol and terminology.
2. Must possess ability to understand and explain complex medical concepts.
3. Two years experience in computer programs, such as word processing required.


COMPETENCY: JOB KNOWLEDGE: 
1. Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
2. Must demonstrate ability and desire to work well with people of different cultures, customs, and educational levels.
3. Must respect cultural diversities and differences.
4. Must demonstrate ability to remain calm when in emotionally charged situations.
