The Cardiac Invasive Lab Tech performs multiple roles within the cardiac laboratory, including assisting physician(s) with invasive cardiac laboratory procedures and conducting various cardiac tests to monitor patients’ heart and blood vessel conditions using diverse cardiology equipment. Responsibilities may also include: preparing procedure rooms, prepping patients for procedures, obtaining and recording patient information, assisting physicians in procedure by circulating and scrubbing procedures, X-ray fluoroscopy proficiency, acquire/measure/calculate hemodynamic date, performing blood work analysis, operate intracardiac ultrasound, clean procedure rooms, and preparing instruments for resterilization. 

Directs and practices safety guidelines for themselves, staff and patients. Independently functions during diagnostic and interventions with minimal supervision. Maintains a high level of expertise in specialty procedures within their assigned lab. Within the Cath Lab this may include structural procedurals and hemodynamics; within Heart Rhythm Services Lab, techs perform device and electrophysiology procedures (EP), hybrid extractions, and operate 3D mapping systems. 

Will be required to work varied hours, shift lengths and respond to an on-call pager which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays and weekends.

The Cardiovascular Tech (CVT) plays a vital role in the cardiovascular laboratories, assisting healthcare providers in the diagnosis and treatment of serious and complex cardiovascular conditions. Key responsibilities include assisting in the scrub and circulating roles during the procedure, preparing, and maintaining a variety of specialized equipment, providing excellent patient care before, during, and after the procedure. Collaborates and communicates effectively with the care team, and adheres to all regulatory requirements, safety protocols, infection control practices, and patient confidentiality. Proficient in pediatric, adult, and congenital specialty procedures within their assigned lab. Within the Cath Lab this may include structural procedurals and hemodynamics such as coronary spasm studies, TAVR, and peripheral procedures; within Heart Rhythm Services Lab, left bundle branch pacing, OR device extractions, and hybrid ablations Flexible to adapt to changing priorities, procedures, and technologies and demonstrates the ability to think critically, problem-solve, and make sound decisions under pressure. After adequate training, will be required to work varied hours, shift lengths and respond to an on-call pager which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays and weekends.

Qualifications

The Cardiac Invasive Lab Tech

Graduate of an accredited program in invasive cardiovascular technology OR graduate of a radiography program OR candidate must be transitioning from a Cardiovascular Tech (CVT) role and have successfully passed the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) exam to become a certified Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES).

Three paths are outlined as follows: 

-Eligibility Requirements for a RCIS/RCES: graduate of an accredited program in invasive cardiovascular technology. 

-Eligibility Requirements for a Radiology Tech (RT): Requires a graduate of an accredited radiography program and diagnostic certificate. At least one (1) year vascular of cardiovascular lab experience preferred. 

-Eligibility Requirements for a CVT: must have successfully passed RCES/RCIS exam. At least one (1) year vascular of cardiovascular lab experience preferred. 

Licensure or Certification:

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.

RCIS or RCES certification required through CCI within 18 months of hire into position. If a Rad Tech, must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Must pass either Advanced Cardiac-Interventional exam or RCIS or /RCES exam within 18 months of hire. 

The Cardiovascular Tech (CVT)

A graduate of a diploma, associate, or baccalaureate academic program in health science (includes, but not limited to, cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, or nursing). 

Requires at least 3 years of patient care experience. One (1) year of vascular or cardiovascular lab experience preferred.

Licensure or Certification:

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required. 

Incumbent in this role must be actively working to be a certified Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) within 18 months of hire into position, which would make them eligible for promotion to a Cardiac Invasive Lab Tech. If Rad Tech (RT), must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and cardiac interventional (CI) credentials required within 18 months of hire.
