Mayo Clinic Platform (MCP) is tightly aligned in this journey aligning the strategy and approach toward these top priorities.
This role is responsible for leading healthcare transformation efforts to bring Platform capabilities internally to Mayo Clinic – the Shield Enablement Program. The Director, Shield Enablement will report to the Shields Enablement leader at Mayo Clinic Platform and will work collaboratively with key leaders across Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic Platform. The ideal candidate will lead a team to ensure overall success, growth and operations of the program.
Position Overview:
The role is responsible for leading the growth and management to bring Platform capabilities in digital solution development and deployment capabilities and services internally to Mayo Clinic staff. Platform capabilities and services include but are not limited to: access to de-identified data, data analytic applications, data science workspaces, model refinement and validation, digital solution development, integration of digital solutions into health care clinical (ie EHR and non EHR) and administrative systems, and optimization. The position will be responsible for the following essential functions:
Strategy
- Create an inclusive and collaborative culture that will drive the team(s) to achieve and surpass targets, goals and objectives. Example targets include: # of patient lives impacted by Platform capabilities, # of digital solutions developed and deployed within Mayo Clinic, # of novel therapeutics or advanced diagnostics created leveraging Platform data, services, or capabilities.
- Develop and implement strategy to scale Platform capabilities to enable Mayo Clinic innovation
- Inform Platform’s R&D data and technology roadmap by collating, documenting Mayo Clinic staff feedback
- Provide strategic oversight of Mayo Clinic staff engagements, operations, and provide applicable support in all aspects of the program
- Modify the packaging and delivery of Platform capabilities to better meet the specific needs of Mayo Clinic
- Monitor the broader health information technology, AI/ML, innovation ecosystem at Mayo Clinic to better understand how and where Platform can provide value
- Collaborate with the leadership team to develop and implement plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes, and people designed to accommodate the rapid growth objectives of our organization
- Build relationships and drive partnerships with the key staff and influencers across Mayo Clinic
Execution
- Management of digital solutions in the entire lifecycle
- Drive operations planning, strategy, implementation, execution and continuous improvement
- Drive efforts to scale the development and deployment of digital solutions within Mayo Clinic
- Foster a culture of operational excellence through the development of processes and tools and metrics-based KPIs for successful operations of the program
- Support adoption of new data, data science applications, workspaces, technologies and tools to optimize for user experience in the program
- Determine need for new capabilities based on budget, Mayo Clinic needs, and improvements in technology
- Ensure alignment with other teams in the Mayo Clinic Platform
Qualifications- Bachelors degree in a relevant information technology field or a minimum 7 years direct enterprise healthcare IT leadership experience.
- 3-5 years supervisory/management experience required.
- 3-5 years project management, system architecture, and design.
- Advanced technical computer skills as required for technical support, oversight and planning to functional area and related systems.
- Experience directly delivering and supporting clinical systems in an inpatient or outpatient setting.
- Experience with cloud architecture, deployments, and management in an enterprise setting.
- Travel up to 25% of the time.
- Experience with Hyperscale Cloud Environments (Google preferred but AWS or Azure also considered)
- Experience with DevOps principles and implementation
- Experience with Interoperability standards such as HL7 and FHIR.
- Experience with solutions integration/delivery in a healthcare setting.
Desired Experience:

- Manage partnerships with industry and startups to pilot, test, and evaluate new digital solutions in health care
- Leading cross-functional health care innovation teams (clinicians, IT, UI/UX, engineers, solution architects, researchers, and 3rd party vendors)
- Experience in digital product solution lifecycle from needs assessment, prototyping, validating, deployment/integration, to ongoing operations
- Change management – strategies for getting clinicians, staff to effectively use digital solutions
- Experience with large-scale healthcare data (EHR, omics, imaging, waveform, video, registries, wearable, etc)
- Data governance and compliance knowledge (IRB, HIPPA, data sharing)
- Collaboration with IT, informatics and regulatory bodies within an academic medical center
- Collaboration with executive leadership (administration, physicians/clinicians, scientists, researchers, CIO, CMIO, CMO, IT leadership) to align projects with financial and strategic goals
- Experience in driving and leading technology development and technical capability to guide strategically and manage resources.
- Business acumen, to gauge not just what can be done but to know what can be cost effectively and sustainably
- Must be able to communicate effectively with customers and constituents.
- This person must have the ability to promote and explain technology initiatives to business leaders outside of the technology organization and to external partners and customers.
- The selected individual must combine a solid technical foundation with forward-looking strategic skills to help develop a Platform strategy to enable Mayo Clinic to capitalize on emerging technologies.
- Ability to think beyond the technology itself and will understand key business drivers that ensure technology investment will provide substantial value or improvements to customers.
- Experience in Product development and agile processes
- Track record of managing large, complex projects with multiple stakeholders.
- Excellent teaming skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels within the organization, internally and externally.
