Responsibilities
We are seeking a passionate and driven summer intern to join our team. In this role, you will contribute to the development and evaluation of immersive VR applications designed to support healthcare providers and improve patient care. This internship is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience building research-driven software in a highly innovative and impactful domain, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and helping shape the future of VR in healthcare.
Key Responsibilities
• VR Application Development: Contribute to the design, development, testing, and maintenance of VR applications in Unity for healthcare research and clinical innovation projects.
• Research Translation: Work closely with researchers, clinicians, designers, and engineers to translate study goals, user needs, and clinical workflow requirements into functional VR prototypes and applications.
• Prototyping & Iteration: Develop and refine immersive prototypes to support human subjects research, usability testing, and iterative evaluation of VR interventions.
• Optimization & Debugging: Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve software issues while improving application performance, stability, and user comfort in VR environments.
• Technical Documentation: Document software architecture, implementation details, and development decisions to support reproducibility, collaboration, and ongoing research efforts.

Qualifications
The incumbent must have received a bachelor of science in engineering, business administration, management information systems, or other technology-related degree from an accredited college or university and be enrolled in or intending to enroll in a graduate degree program.
Preference give to those:
- who have a degree in or are pursuing Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related technical field
- With a strong interest in healthcare technology, virtual reality, and research-driven software development.
- Experience developing in Unity and programming in C#.
- Familiarity with VR development concepts such as 3D interaction, interface design, performance optimization, and user comfort considerations.
- Experience with debugging, testing, version control, and iterative development practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical, research, and clinical teams.
Authorization to work and remain in the United States, without necessity for Mayo Clinic sponsorships now, or in the future (for example, be a U.S. Citizen, national, or permanent resident, refugee, or asylee). Mayo Clinic does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.
