Responsibilities

The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine is seeking a highly motivated and mission-driven Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the community-engaged research team led by principal investigator, Dr. LaPrincess Brewer. The fellow will play a key role in advancing the FAITH! (Fostering African American Improvement in Total Health!) Emergency Preparedness Initiative, a project that provides culturally relevant resources to African American faith communities to help them build capacity for emergency response — including cardiac events, public health crises, severe weather, and other emergencies.

This position offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to innovative, equity-focused preventive cardiology research using community-based participatory research (CBPR) . The fellow will work within a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, researchers, community partners, and other stakeholders as an integral member of the Brewer Collaboratory. They will also communicate directly with community members and study participants, and lead data analysis and manuscript efforts.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to research activities related to the FAITH! Emergency Preparedness Initiative, including study design, implementation, data analysis, and dissemination.
  • Analyze existing quantitative and qualitative datasets and develop manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant proposals, progress reports, and conference presentations.
  • Collaborate with community partners, including faith leaders and organizations, to promote trust-based, culturally informed engagement.
  • Contribute to other community-based participatory research (CBPR) projects led by Dr. Brewer’s team, focused on developing digital health interventions and culturally tailored cardiovascular prevention strategies for African American communities.
  • Participate in regular mentoring meetings, seminars, and professional development opportunities to advance academic and leadership skills.

Qualifications

Required:

Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program. Research Fellow is appropriate for individuals who have completed no more than one prior postdoctoral fellowship, at Mayo Clinic or elsewhere.

  • Demonstrated experience in community-engaged or health disparities research
  • Strong scientific writing skills, with evidence of first-author manuscripts, publications, or equivalent writing-intensive research experience.
  • Proficiency in data analysis (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in multicultural and multidisciplinary settings.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles and approaches.
  • Experience working with African American faith-based or community organizations.
  • Background or interest in preventive cardiology, digital health, or emergency preparedness.
  • Experience in project management or coordination of multi-site or community-based research projects.
