ResponsibilitiesMayo Clinic is seeking a Software Engineer to design and develop scalable software solutions and automation systems that advance our clinical, research, and operational goals. This role builds upon modern cloud and AI technologies—leveraging Google Cloud Platform, Azure DevOps, and state-of-the-art frameworks such as FastAPI, LangChain, and React—to deliver intelligent, data-driven solutions that improve patient care and organizational efficiency. Our Software Engineers collaborate across disciplines to ensure solutions are robust, maintainable, and aligned with Mayo Clinic’s mission of transforming healthcare through innovation.
This position works closely with data scientists, clinicians, product owners, architects, and other engineers to translate complex business requirements into practical and impactful software solutions. Responsibilities include designing and developing end-to-end services and features—spanning APIs, LangChain workflows, and UI integrations—using modern programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or Go. Engineers engage in Agile and SAFe methodologies, embrace DevOps and CI/CD best practices, and implement secure, scalable solutions on Google Cloud Platform (Compute, AI APIs, IAM) using Azure DevOps pipelines.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in backend development (FastAPI, Python), LangChain, React integration, and GCP deployment. They will demonstrate proven ability in AI/ML solution development and in designing scalable cloud architectures that drive innovation in healthcare. Experience with cloud-based AI/ML services such as GCP, AWS SageMaker, or Azure ML is preferred. A deep understanding of the software development lifecycle, commitment to quality code, and familiarity with healthcare domain concepts—including clinical workflows and regulatory considerations—are highly desirable.
Software Engineers in this role contribute to the design and maintenance of robust data platforms that power biomedical, clinical, and translational research, while helping shape the next generation of healthcare solutions at Mayo Clinic.
Key Responsibilities
• Design and develop scalable software solutions and automation systems.
• Partner with data scientists, clinicians, product owners, architects, and other engineers to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Write and maintain high-quality code using languages like Python, JavaScript, or Golang.
• Engage in DevOps best practices, Agile/SAFe methodologies, and CI/CD processes.
• Implement solutions on Google Cloud Platform (Compute, AI APIs, IAM, and build CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps.
• Own individual services/features end-to-end (API, LangChain workflow, UI integration).
A Codility Test may be required as part of the candidate selection process.
This position is primarily remote, however incumbent may spend approximately 20% of their time on the Rochester, MN campus. Therefore the incumbent must live within a reasonable driving distance of the Rochester campus. Mayo Clinic will not sponsor or transfer visas for this position including F1 OPT STEM.
QualificationsBachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field; Or an Associates’ degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field with an additional 2 years of experience as described below.
· Have working knowledge and experience of Software Engineering with a minimum of internships and a minimum of 1 yr. of experience, or 2yrs of experience coding applications or services in a high-level language (C, C++, Golang, Java, C# etc.).
· Demonstrated problem solving and time management skills.
· Possesses strong technical aptitude for designing and implementing software solutions.
· Experience with modern application development frameworks
· Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
· Deep hands-on technical expertise, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Experience with Agile software development techniques.
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
· Ability to use a wide variety of open-source technologies and cloud-based services.
· Experience with Google and Azure cloud environments
· Experience in databases, analytics, big data systems or business intelligence products
· Experience with building high-performance, highly available and scalable distributed systems.
· Experience developing software for healthcare related industries.
Preferred Skill and Experience:
- Strong experience in backend (FastAPI, Python), LangChain, React integration, GCP deployment, Azure DevOps CI/CD.
- Demonstrated skill in AI/ML and implementing scalable cloud solutions.
- Experience with cloud AI/ML services like Google Cloud Platform (GCP), AWS SageMaker, or Azure ML.
- Expertise in the full software development lifecycle.
- Knowledge of healthcare domain, clinical workflows, and regulatory requirements is beneficial.
- Design solutions that enhance operational efficiency and improve the user experience within Mayo Clinic.
- Contribute to innovative solutions that leverage cutting-edge AI and Generative AI technologies in a healthcare setting.
- Build and maintain robust data platforms that support advanced biomedical, clinical, and translational research.
